Embarking on a motorcycle road trip is an exhilarating experience, but it's essential to pack wisely to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Whether you're hitting the open road for a weekend getaway or embarking on an epic cross-country expedition, having the right gear can make all the difference. So, saddle up and let's dive into the must-have items for your motorcycle adventure!
(DISCLAMER - None of this matters because you are going to do you!)
1. Right Saddle Bag: Gear for Every Situation
In your right saddlebag, stash essentials to tackle any unexpected twist or turn on your journey. Rain gear is a must-have to keep you dry when Mother Nature decides to unleash her fury. Just make sure it won't melt to your pipes – that's a lesson you only need to learn once! Pack a towel for drying off morning dew or unexpected rain showers, and don't forget a small emergency jump pack to rescue your battery if it decides to play dead. A compact 1/4" drive ASE & Metric socket & screwdriver set ensures you're ready for quick fixes on the fly. And for those "oh no" moments, a dry box with bike-specific tools and misc items, including a spare key fob battery, it will save the day.
Here's a picture of something that happened to my first 1999 Road King Classic while riding on I-94 near Jackson Michigan. I was on my way home from Michigan International Speedway and just got on the freeway. I was traveling 70mph and heard my exhaust get a little louder. 30 seconds later my pipe broke and was scraping the ground. I quickly pulled to the shoulder safely. Dug through my bags and found a rag, ripped a strip off, tied up the dangling pipe and muffler then rode home with unwanted custom straight pipes.
2. Left Saddle Bag: Shoes, Chaps, and Souvenirs
In the left saddlebag, reserve space for items that enhance comfort and convenience during your ride. Pack a pair of shoes that can be flattened to fit snugly at the bottom of the bag. This space is also perfect for storing chaps and other cold weather gear if your journey takes you from chilly climates to warmer ones. Plus, it's the ideal spot to stash souvenirs and items purchased along the way.
3. Tour Pack: The Traveler's Treasure Trove
Ah, the tour pack – every rider's best friend on long-distance journeys. Stock it with essentials to keep you fueled, protected, and prepared for whatever the road throws your way. A cooler is a lifesaver for keeping beverages chilled during those hot summer rides, while storage for a full-face helmet ensures maximum safety on the highway when your not cruising with a half helmet on. Don't forget spare gloves, a gator or bandana for dusty trails, bugs, or rocks thrown up from the road. I also keep a high-vis vest or shirt for navigating busy city streets or crowded highways. Tuck away your glasses case, bike manual, and other miscellaneous items for easy access when needed.
4. Luggage/Clothing: Pack Smart, Ride Easy
When it comes to luggage and clothing, opt for versatility and convenience. When my left saddlebag isn't designated for riding gear, I use a removable bag or waterproof dry bag to pack clothing essentials. Consider investing in Harley brand luggage or luggage designed to fit snugly on the tour pack rack or luggage rack – it's a game-changer for maximizing space and organization.
Remember, the key to packing for a motorcycle road trip is finding the right balance between preparedness and practicality. While it's tempting to bring along every gadget and gizmo, focus on packing items that will enhance your riding experience and provide peace of mind on the open road. So, load up your saddlebags, rev up your engine, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime – the road awaits!
